"PANDO," bred by Lorna B. Demidoff was the first great modern
Siberian Husky show dog. "Rarely defeated in breed competition,
[he] was winning and placing in the Working Group at a time
when Siberians were rarely even looked at. From 1957 through 1961,
he won four Specialty Shows and five consecutive Bests of Breed at
Westminster," goes his description in The New Complete Siberian Husky
by Michael Jennings.
The heavily-inbred Pando was a "prepotent sire" who permanently
changed the look of the Siberian Husky breed. Jennings states, "at
the 1966 Specialty Show held in Philadelphia, it was discovered that
of the 103 dogs being exhibited, 100 were direct descendants of
Pando," who was eleven years old at that time and appeared there
in Veteran Dog class, winning the class at his final public appearance
in a dog show.
This crucial show-dog pedigree from the late 1950s clearly demonstrates
the "non-unique Seppala" contribution to the Siberian Husky show-dog
genome. Pando's actual Seppala percentage is 74.61% (this is higher
than previously quoted figures, a more accurate figure obtained through
ancestral database calculations). This pedigree and its Seppala
percentage eloquently shows the futility of using
"back-to-the-boat" percentage calculations to determine
Seppala status.
This six-generation pedigree demonstrates how deeply indebted Mrs.
Demidoff was to the Wheeler and Turner kennels for the foundation
of her successful show bloodline. Although the fact is traditionally
downplayed in favour of the glorification of Eva B. Seeley, the
pedigree makes it obvious that without Cold River and Seppala
Kennels, Monadnock would not have been possible.
